Telling Family About My Diabetes

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Although it was a short day at work today, I was still fairly busy trying to get two extra hours of work into the shorter day.  We were allowed to leave at 3 PM, however, I usually take my mid-afternoon snack at that time and almost left without doing so.  Luckily, I remembered and shoved a piece of whole wheat bread into my mouth before packing up.  Yum, yum.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and we are going up to an Aunt’s house for the festivities.  I like going up there and seeing the family, but it kind of feels weird about not being able to eat as much as I used to, or without as much variety.  I told my mother to mention my “disease” to my aunt.  I just wanted to make sure she knew. You should not be embarrassed to tell your family about this.  It is not a disgrace - they will understand (or at least most family members will. I did not want her to think that something was wrong, or that I did not like her food when I did not take a lot.  I really did not think about telling her to make sure that there would be something for me to eat – it is Thanksgiving and I knew that there would be turkey.  Since my father is also diabetic (although he does not always follow his diet), I also knew that there would be something for him to eat.  But having my aunt know about this, I know she made sure I would have something to eat as well [Thank you!].

Have a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!!!!
