Keeping Kosher With Diabetes
Wednesday, September 13, 2006
I have a kosher home. Being under one dietary restriction is hard enough, but being under two dietary restrictions makes managing this disease even harder. Some of the foods such as pork, shrimp or a combination of food and cheese that would add some additional flavor to foods is against the rules of kashrut (keeping kosher).
But, I do eat that stuff, you say. Yes I do, outside of the house. I know that some may call me a hypocrite, but having a kosher home is better than not doing it at all. Religions, all religions, are wondrous things (no. I am not a deeply religious person) and I do believe in the power of faith. If you go to your house of worship once this year, that is at least one more time than not going at all.
Anyway, being diabetic and keeping kosher is very doable and those of you with other special dietary concerns, may need to research a little more for viable food alternatives, but they are out there.
