The Fat Man At Breakfast

Sunday, September 3, 2006

This morning we had the “Continental Breakfast” again at the hotel.  I had the Rice Krispies cereal this morning instead of the Raisin Bran.  After looking at the nutritional information for the cereals, I was amazed that the amount of carbs compared even to the Frosted Flakes.  Yes, yes, I knew that the raisins were full of carbohydrates, but I figured that the bran would somehow negate the higher figures.  Well, now that I know, I went with the cereal that goes snap, crackle and pop (tomorrow back to the Cheerios). I had some whole wheat (toasted) with a little smear of butter and a half-cup of apple juice.  Semi-filling, but once again - unsatisfying.

As I was waiting for my family to finish up their own food, a really large man walked in.  Not to be so politically correct, a fat man walked in.  Because of my recent obsession with my own weight, I watched to see what he ate.  Well he took THREE pieces of white bread, which he toasted and buttered, and a Danish, along with a large cup of juice (and another cup of something else).  I have to admit, at first, I was a bit disgusted.  I wanted to shout out, “Hey, don’t you know what you are doing to your body!”  However, afterwards I felt jealous.   I mean this guy had to be pushing 350-400 pounds and was eating like he did not care.  I bet that he did not have this freakin’ diabetes disease and was probably going to come back for a second helping that he would enjoy – and most importantly, I would not.

We spent the day at the amusement park and for lunch I had a chicken salad with half a serving of light French dressing.  At the food court where we ate, there were all kinds of different “international” foods to choose from.  Of course, I played the healthy card and even had water with my meal.

I have not been here for about 5 years, however, I knew exactly where the fudge shop was.  I even remember the Rocky Road Fudge bar I purchased back then.  Today, I stayed clear of the shop.  My wife and kids had ice cream cones (the waffle cones looked good), but I did allow myself a little cheat – they had freshly made kettle popcorn and purchased a bag for my snack (but only had about 1 ½ cups worth instead of the whole bag).

We had dinner on the road.  Because we were on vacation with the kids, we gave my daughter the choice of restaurants.  She picked McDonalds.  I had the Oriental chicken salad again.  However, at this particular restaurant, they put the dressing on it already and it did not come with a packet of almonds.  Since I have only been putting on a little bit of dressing, the taste was overpowering and would probably not eat it like that again.  Hopefully, it will be a long time before I go to another McDonalds.

We got home too late (five hours on the road) and I did not exercise.
