Gravy With My Chicken

Saturday, September 2, 2006

Today was a total wash - literally, not figuratively.  The rain just kept coming down all day.  Although we were on vacation, we did not let it really keep us down.  We had breakfast at the hotel (Days Inn), went to the mall, had some lunch, relaxed at the hotel and went out for a quick dinner.  It was good just to spend the day with the family.  I really enjoyed it.

Just like the Best Western, this Days Inn also had a “Continental Breakfast.” However, this was more of the breakfast I had imagined with cold cereal, Danish and juice.  I was not really pleased with the choices.  I guess if you just had the apples, oranges and juice, you could have a “healthy” breakfast, but it was definitely not low carb.  They had three choices for cereal, Raisin Bran, Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies.  I had the Raisin Bran, so I would at least have some bran/fiber with the meal along with some semi-whole wheat bread (it was darker than the white bread, but I doubt if it was whole grain wheat), which I toasted with a drop of butter and a half and orange.  I have been to Day’s Inns before and usually they at least have Cheerios as a choice or at least a fat-free muffin of some kind.  They also only had whole milk, so I only took a half-cup instead of the full cup of skim milk I like to have.  I was not happy with breakfast.

We had lunch at a Cracker Barrel.  I ordered the chicken over rice with a side salad and broccoli. I even made sure that the chicken was grilled.  However, the food was served in what they call a “Southern style” and have some type of gravy over everything.  So, the grilled chicken was in a gravy and both were poured over the rice.  After working in a restaurant for a number of years, I have learned that you never, ever, send your food back unless there is something completely wrong with it – so I ate it.  However, I did not eat the full portion because I do not know how much sugar is in the gravy (the carb counting book I took did not list Cracker Barrel).  All I can say is that the food was really, really good.  I must also mention, that while I was ordering, my wife did mention to me that they did have a Low-Carb section on their menu.  I will most definitely go back again, but will order a low-carb item.

For dinner, we went to Friendlies.  It was real close to the hotel, I have known it to be kid-friendly and my wife was in the mood for ice cream.  Although we should have left when entering the premises because of the foul odor near the front door, we took a seat in the back.  I ordered the grilled chicken Cobb salad, which was not bad.  It was also a little different from what I can have at home, since it came with bacon.  [What I really wanted to order was a nice, juicy burger with the works.] I did not have any bread, so for dessert, I allowed myself to have no-sugar added ice cream.  My only choice was vanilla.  I was never really a big lover of ice cream, but I was in the mood for it.  After taking a few spoonfuls, I was not impressed.  The ice cream tasted like a slightly flavored melting ice cube.  My youngest daughter, however, enjoyed most of it.

I did a half hour on the step machine at this hotel.  I wanted to go walking/running, but it was too wet outside.  I first tried the treadmill here, but could not get this thing working either.  When I was almost through with my machine, I watched someone else go on the machine and now know how to use it – maybe next vacation.

Mmmmm. . . . . gravy.
