Exercise and Back Pain

Thursday, August 10, 2006

When I was younger, I used to think that baseball players were being childish when they would sit out of a game because their “backs hurt.”  Big overpaid babies, I used to thought.  Then, about 15 or so years ago, I threw my back out.  I was not lifting any heavy weights or carrying anything heavy, I was pulling out a 3-pound plastic lawn chair out of the shed.  A bolt of lightning went through my body and I collapsed on the floor.  I saw a chiropractor who did some adjustments, and it eventually went away.  When you have back pain, it affects everything you do from the simplest things like walking, sitting or getting back up.

However, back pain just does not “go away.” So for fifteen years I occasionally “throw out” my back.  Once it is thrown out, there is not much you can do, except live with the pain until it eventually goes away.  A few months ago, it really went out bad and I got a cortisone shot (from my doctor) right into both sides of my back.  It was also bad enough that I had an MRI done which showed that I have a herniated disc.  (Lucky me).  So instead of having one condition that will not go away, diabetes makes two.

A bad back and diabetes are related when it comes to health.  There have been a few nights over the last week that I have not exercised.  I feel really bad about not being able to even do my walking, but the pain after the first 15 minutes becomes too great.  I have tried to do some stretching when I could instead of the exercise, and to get my heart rate up I lay in bed and just move my arms up and down for the thirty minute period.  I probably looked kind of silly doing that, but only my family was able to see me, and it was at least something.

When I hurt my back a few months ago to prompt me to see the doctor, he told me that I had a little too much weight.  I have lost a lot since then and alas, my back went out and when I first hurt my back those so many years ago, I was in a pretty good condition.
